Island ist zweieinhalb Mal so gross wie die Schweiz. Scharenweise liegen Vulkane auf der Insel verstreut. Dreissig davon sind aktive Vulkan Systeme. Die Hälfte des Landes (ein Gebiet grösser als die Niederlande), besteht aus verschiedenen Arten von Lava. Die Laki Ausbrüche von 1783/84 gelten als die Lava-reichsten Vulkanausbrüche weltweit, bei denen über 12 km3 (30 Tonnen) flüssiges Gestein gefördert wurden.

Der aktivste Vulkan Islands heisst Kafka. Ungefähr alle 50 Jahre verursacht er einen riesigen Ausbruch. In den letzten Monaten ist sein CO2 Ausstoss wieder stark angestiegen. Möglicherweise ein Vorbote drohender Gefahr?
Iceland is two and a half times as large as Switzerland, or 20% smaller than England. A profusion of volcanoes is spread across the island. Thirty of them are active volcanic systems. Half of the country (a size larger than the Netherlands) is covered in different types of lava.
The greatest amount of lava that ever erupted from a volcano is thought to be the 12 km3 (30 Tonnen) of liquid lava from the Laki eruptions of 1783/84 .
